In March, manufacturers with wholesale sales of more than 10,000 units of passenger NEVs contributed 92.5 percent of all wholesale sales of NEVs in the month, CPCA said.

These carmakers have an estimated sales of 1.05 million units in April, and based on last month's structure, China's April wholesale sales of passenger NEVs will be at 1.14 million units, the CPCA said.

In the January-April period, China's NEV wholesale sales were estimated at 4 million units, up 42 percent year-on-year, according to the CPCA.

In China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell vehicles. Their exact numbers are expected to be announced later this month.

Driven by the trade-in policy, some of the new models have performed well recently, with some big carmakers seeing record sales of NEVs, the CPCA said.

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863), (NYSE: XPEV), Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY), and (NYSE: NIO) all saw near-record-high performances, while many second-tier carmakers saw strong performances that pushed up overall NEV sales, according to the CPCA.

Among the major carmakers' wholesale NEV sales, BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) was at 372,615, Geely 125,563, SAIC-GM-Wuling 77,878, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) 58,459 and Changan Automobile 56,144 units.

Data released by BYD earlier this month showed it sold 380,089 NEVs in April, including 372,615 passenger NEVs, and 7,474 commercial NEVs.

Nio Inc had 5,100 insurance registrations in China last week, including 3,470 under the Nio brand, 1,280 for Onvo and 350 for Firefly.
