Major electric vehicle (EV) makers saw a mixed performance in insurance registrations in China last week.

For the week of May 12-18 -- week 20, 2025 -- Nio (NYSE: NIO) branded vehicles saw 4,240 insurance registrations in China, up 7.89 percent from the previous week's 3,930, according to figures shared by several auto industry watchers on Weibo today.

Nio's sub-brand Onvo had 1,580 insurance registrations last week, down 4.82 percent from 1,660 in the previous week.

Nio's other sub-brand, Firefly, saw 830 insurance registrations last week, up 76.60 percent from 470 the previous week.

Firefly launched its first model on April 19 and deliveries began on April 29.

Nio Inc, which includes the Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands, had 6,650 insurance registrations in China last week, up 9.74 percent from 6,060 the previous week.

Nio Inc delivered 23,900 vehicles in April, its second highest ever, behind 31,138 in December last year, according to figures it announced on May 1.

The Nio brand delivered 19,269 vehicles in April, up 23.36 percent year-on-year and up 88.56 percent from March.

Onvo delivered 4,400 vehicles in April, down 8.71 percent from 4,820 in March.

Firefly delivered 231 vehicles in April. Its effective delivery dates in April were April 29 and April 30.

On May 16, Nio launched updated ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle) and EC6 coupe SUV, with unchanged pricing but with many feature upgrades. Deliveries of these two facelifted models are set to begin today.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had 11,130 insurance registrations in China last week, up 262.54 percent from 3,070 in the previous week.

The US EV maker has a plant in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.

Tesla sold 28,731 vehicles in China's domestic market in April, down 8.56 percent from 31,421 in the same month a year ago and down 61.24 percent from 74,127 in March, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Its Shanghai plant exported 29,728 vehicles in April, down 3.31 percent from 30,746 a year earlier while up 532.38 percent from 4,701 in March.

(NYSE: XPEV) had 5,810 insurance registrations last week, down 15.43 percent from 6,870 the week before.

The company delivered 35,045 vehicles in April, the second highest on record behind December 2024's 36,695 units.

That's the sixth consecutive month that Xpeng's monthly deliveries have been above the 30,000 mark, up 273.10 percent year-on-year and up 5.54 percent from March.

Xpeng announced on May 15 that the name of its new coupe sedan, internally codenamed E29, is the new P7, with a launch expected in July-August.

Later today, Xpeng will debut the Max variant of the Mona M03 sedan, which is expected to come with enhanced smart driving capabilities.

(NASDAQ: LI) had 9,240 insurance registrations last week, up 13.24 percent from 8,160 the week before.

It delivered 33,939 vehicles in April, up 31.61 percent from 25,787 a year ago but down 7.46 percent from 36,674 in March.

Earlier today, Li Auto announced that the Home variant of the Li Mega MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) rolled off the production line at the company's plant in Beijing, with deliveries set to begin on May 23.

(HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) branded vehicles had 55,100 insurance registrations last week, down 18.95 percent from 67,980 the week before.

The company sold 380,089 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April, up 21.34 percent year-on-year and up 0.71 percent from March.

Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) had 7,160 insurance registrations last week, up 38.22 percent from 5,180 the week before.

Xiaomi's EV unit, Xiaomi EV, delivered over 28,000 units in April, it announced on May 1.

The Xiaomi YU7 -- Xiaomi's first SUV -- will be unveiled at Xiaomi's strategic new product launch event on May 22, starting at 7 pm Beijing time.

The (NYSE: ZK) brand had 3,640 insurance registrations last week, down 15.55 percent from 4,310 the week before.

The Zeekr brand delivered 13,727 vehicles in April, down 14.68 percent from the previous year and 10.99 percent from March.

Including Lynk & Co deliveries, the Zeekr Group delivered 41,316 vehicles in April, up 1.48 percent from 40,715 in March.

Zeekr will launch the Zeekr 8X mid-size SUV in the fourth quarter, its CEO Andy An said last week.

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) had 7,500 insurance registrations last week, down 3.85 percent from 7,800 the week before.

It delivered 41,039 units in April, its second highest ever behind December 2024's 42,517 units.

That monthly delivery was up 173.50 percent from 15,005 a year ago and up 10.63 percent from 37,095 in March.

Leapmotor's earnings report released yesterday showed that it saw a net loss of RMB 130 million for the first quarter, a decrease of 87.17 percent year-on-year.

Aito -- a brand jointly created by and Seres Group -- had 7,490 insurance registrations last week, down 0.66 percent from 7,540 the previous week.
