Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) is set to begin using its in-house developed Turing AI chip, marking the electric vehicle (EV) maker's move away from Nvidia's autonomous driving chips.

The G7 SUV (sport utility vehicle), set to debut tomorrow, will be the first model to feature the Turing AI chip, Xpeng announced today on Weibo.

Yesterday, Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said that the G7 will be the first AI car with L3 computing power.

The G7 has cutting-edge technologies in autonomous driving, cabin system, and core electrical technologies, while also offering family users an unparalleled combination of space and comfort, he said.

Xpeng announced on August 28, 2024, at the launch event for the Mona M03 electric sedan that its first AI chip, Turing, achieved successful tape-out on August 23.

Tape-out is a term in the field of integrated circuit design, referring to the process of converting circuit designs into chips that can be produced on an assembly line after the chip design is completed.

After a successful tape-out, if the chip prototype passes subsequent tests, mass production can begin.

The Turing chip will be used in Xpeng's EVs, robots, and flying cars, according to Xpeng.

Xpeng's currently available models primarily use the Nvidia Orin X autonomous driving chip.

The Turing chip is a central computing architecture chip supporting smart cockpits and smart driving, with AI computing power equivalent to three Orin X chips, Mr. He said last August.

The Turing chip's computing power is about 700 TOPS, comparable to Nvidia's latest Thor, according to previous reports by some domestic media outlets.

Xpeng is the second Chinese EV startup after Nio (NYSE: NIO) to mass-produce its own smart driving chips.

The ET9, which began deliveries in late March, is equipped with two of Nio's in-house developed Shenji NX9031 smart driving chips.

The updated versions of the ES6 SUV, EC6 coupe SUV, ET5 sedan, and ET5T wagon, launched last month, have switched from four Nvidia Orin X chips to a single Shenji NX9031 chip for smart driving.
