BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) fifth car carrier, the BYD Xi'an, will transport thousands of new energy vehicles (NEVs) to Europe as the company continues to expand its overseas market presence.
About 7,000 NEVs are being loaded onto the BYD Xi'an car carrier, which will transport them to countries including the UK, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, BYD announced today on Weibo.
BYD did not provide further details, but the images it shared show models including the BYD Seagull and the BYD Song Plus DM-i awaiting loading.
The BYD Xi'an, named after Xi'an in Shaanxi province, northwest China, has a capacity of 9,200 vehicles. The city is home to one of BYD's largest automobile production bases.
The car carrier was delivered to BYD in Yizheng, Jiangsu province, eastern China, and began its maiden voyage on June 21.
The ship is 219.9 meters long, has a beam of 37.7 meters, a service speed of 19 knots, and 16 decks.
BYD's fleet already includes four operational car carriers: BYD Explorer No. 1, BYD Hefei, BYD Changzhou, and BYD Shenzhen, with BYD Shenzhen being the only one with 9,200 standard loading spaces.
BYD officially entered the European passenger vehicle market in September 2022 and has since become one of the major NEV players there.
In April, BYD's battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Europe reached 7,231 units, surpassing Tesla for the first time, which recorded 7,165 units, according to a report by market research firm Jato Dynamics at the end of last month.
The company's 2025 vehicle sales target is 5.5 million units, including over 800,000 units in overseas markets, its chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said on March 25.
BYD sold 382,476 vehicles in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.27 percent and a month-on-month increase of 0.63 percent.
It sold 89,047 NEVs overseas in May, marking the sixth consecutive month of record-breaking sales. This represents a year-on-year increase of 137.46 percent and a month-on-month increase of 12.60 percent.
